Interest in factors contributing to women’s ability to progress to management and leadership positions is gaining impetus. This article expands the body of knowledge on the major contributing factors external to the work environment, as well as factors internal to the organisation that impact on women’s achievement of professional success. An empirical study of 301 professional and business women in South Africa indicated that there is a significant relationship between both external support and internal organisational support, and the professional success of women. It is argued in this article that the underrepresentation of women in decision-making positions can be addressed through the identification of environmental factors (external and internal support) that contribute to women’s professional success.
