Ethical questions of fairness, responsibility and burden-sharing are central to the international politics and policies of climate change. This paper considers two ethical issues pertinent to South Africa's national climate change response, namely: (1) What is the global greenhouse gas (GHG) atmospheric concentration level that the Paris Agreement seeks to achieve (the so-called carbon budget) and (2) What is South Africa's fair share of global GHG? The paper evaluates South Africa's climate change pledges in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), together with suggestions as to how business leaders could contribute to the national climate change mitigation effort.
