Black consciousness: Pride and dignity or militancy and racism — an empirical study

Two small studies among Coloureds and Indians in Durban show that a Black Consciousness identification at a popular verbal level lacks the ideological content often ascribed to the movement and its leaders. Some of the results indicate that the Coloured group may benefit in collective personal terms from a certain form of social group consciousness — a process which might possibly assuage socio-psychological marginality.
